We asked Katya Davo, Insurance Specialist at Shoreline Risk Advisors, to shed light on the subject of health insurance coverage when in México.
Katya Davó services a large clientele of non-residents and ex-patriots with International and Mexican Insurance polices for health, life, home and auto coverage and is located along the Corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas within the Koral Center of shops and services.
Medical needs and accidents don’t have boundaries and neither should your health insurance. For visitors and residents living in México, Katya emphasizes that purchasing insurance is the right thing to do. She noted that many popular US health insurance policies do not cover people out of country. Katya consults on a variety of policies from well-known and reputable providers that offer options with often lower premiums and lower deductibles than clients’ local policies, or that in which they can purchase through travel, airline or credit card companies. For people traveling to México for less than 3 months, there are excellent travel insurance options with direct payment to hospitals. Costs of health insurance policies, like with any policy, vary by the insured person’s age. Shoreline’s international options provide global coverage, and include additional benefits such as medical evacuation. Some even include second medical opinion by international renowned specialists. “Reputable international health insurance allows the insured to concentrate on getting well, without the added risk of losing their entire life savings, or more, in the process” states Katya.
She also explained that in México, insurance claims are often submitted by the insured, not the doctor, hospital, or specialist’s office. Having a responsible and reliable International Insurance Agent is as important as the insurance itself, since Shoreline also assists clients with claim submissions and the follow-ups necessary to complete insurance processes and procedures. However, one of the most important things to remember about international health insurance, states Katya, “is that in an emergency situation where you are hospitalized, or with a scheduled procedure, the Insurance Company will provide a Letter of Guarantee.”
This is a guarantee of payment between a hospital and an insurance company. It provides pre-authorization by the insurance company, allows the insured the benefit of direct billing, and removes the financial considerations when evaluating the best medical care. The silver lining, assures Katya, is that if you just shop around, international residents of México can find “very competitively priced, reputable health insurance policies that cover you wherever you are.”
