In the waves
Los Cabos, located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula straight down the Pacific Coast from San Diego, is surrounded by water, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other. Subtropical temperatures, year-round surf, sea temperatures that range from a low of 70°F in February to a high of 88°F in September, and sunny skies 350 days of the year make this a water sports destination with something for every aquatic lover. Easy beach access for swimming, stand up paddle boarding (SUP), kayaking and snorkeling abound in the Sea of Cortez. The nationally recognized Blue Flag beaches have been certified by the international Foundation for Environmental Education to have public services, provide clean, fresh water and be sensitive to the environment. The following beaches in Los Cabos are certified Blue Flag: Acapulquito, Chileno, El Corsario, locally known as The Cannery, Medano, Las Viudas or Widow’s beach, Palmilla, Santa María and La Ribera.
Pack a lunch and delight in the Sea of Cortez. Cabo Pulmo, a national marine park, is a great adventure and at the top of the list for underwater fun and beachside camping.
Médano Beach offers most water activities including kayaking, SUP, jet skiing, waterskiing, banana boats, parasailing, beach volleyball, restaurants, bars and much more. Sparsely populated surf beaches offer the surf adventurer the ultimate playground. The Sea of Cortez surf, along the East Cape, harbors some of the world’s famous breaks such as Shipwrecks beach. In San Jose del Cabo there is Zipper’s and Acapulquito, locally known as Old Man’s for its long board propensity. On the east side of Cabo San Lucas is the Monuments break. Baja California Sur’s beaches are host to numerous international and local surf events and windsurf competitions. During the winter months, surfers flock to the magical town of Todos Santos and Cerritos Beach on the Pacific Coast for some of the best ocean surfing in the world. Extending along all coasts, there are miles and miles of sandy beaches perfect for beach-combing, sunsets, yoga at dawn, or a casual stroll as the sound of gently rolling waves surrounds you.
Blue flag beaches
Palmilla Beach
Los Cabos Corridor, KM 27. Located at the luxurious Palmilla master-planned community, this swimmable beach is perfect for everyone. kayaking, SUP, snorkeling, and just playing in the waves are everyday Palmilla activities. It is a certified Blue Flag beach, with washrooms and limited wheelchair access. Of historical importance as well, this sandy beach is used for local and sports fishing boat excursions.
Acapulquito Beach
Los Cabos Corridor,KM 27.5. Also referred to as “Old Man’s” for its longboard surf history. Some of the best longboarders in the world have come for decades to grace its grand rolling sets, including the international longboard champion Mike Doyle who has a surf school right on the beach at the Cabo Surf Hotel.
Costa Azul Beach
Los Cabos Corridor, KM 29. Costa Azul Beach has two world-class surf areas, Zipper’s and La Roca. Boogie boards catch the waves by the shore. Rentals and amenities are close by. Host of the Los Cabos Open of Surf, which attracts international competitors to one of the most prestigious surf competitions for both men and women.
La Playita Beach/El Ganzo Beach
This fishing village has two swimmable beaches, as well as a fish center, sport fishing docks, and a 200-slip, private marina in Puerto Los Cabos. Take the Centenario Bridge from downtown San José del Cabo, and follow the signs. It is also the gateway to the East Cape and the coastal East Cape Road.
Shipwreck's Beach
East Cape Road, KM 9. A surfer’s paradise off the main highway, keen surfers and off-grid residents love this Sea of Cortez cove for surfing, fishing, diving, kayaking, snorkeling, and beachcombing. Swimming is only safe when calm. No amenities; just sun, sand, and sea.
Cabo Pulmo
Can be accessed by the East Cape Road, or the Transpeninsular Highway 1 via La Ribera. It is a national marine park excellent for swimming, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and windsurfing. It is the feeding ground for newborn whales. Camping, fishing, some dining, lodging, and amenities available.
