Erik Evans – PGA Director of Golf, Cabo del Sol

Erik Evans is the Head Golf Professional at Cabo del Sol. Cabo del Sol has a renowned 18-hole Nicklaus Ocean Course, as well as its magnificent 18-hole Weiskopf Desert Course. Evans shared his personal golf history with Cabo Dream Homes.

I grew up in the Philadelphia area. I have one younger brother. We both grew up playing a lot of different sports. In high school, we felt more connected to golf. As we went into college we stuck with the golf, stayed in golf, worked in private golf clubs.
Our family had a membership at a private club in the Philadelphia area, and we were very involved with the world of golf. My brother Keith worked in the golf business for five years, and then ended up working for one of the members.”
In fact, the strong link he has to his brother and father make them his favorite people to play with. Indeed, his dream is to once again play Cypress where they once played. Outside of his family, his role model golf pros are Tiger Woods and Lee Trevino.

Evans’commitment to golf, after ten years of working in the business, then turned professional. He shared:
I headed out to Southern California, where I went to a private golf school and earned a specialized degree in Golf Management. Until then, on the East Coast, I had been an amateur in the world of golf. My golf professional career began upon graduation on the West Coast in California. I was elected to PGA membership in 2007. I worked for nine years in the Southern California area at Leeside Golf Club of Hollywood and the Los Angeles Country Club until I was given an opportunity in Mexico.”

Evans has been a part of the Los Cabos golf tapestry since 2009. He worked as Director of Golf at Diamante from 2009 to 2012 and as Head Golf Professional at Querencia from 2012 to 2016. He has been at Cabo del Sol since June of 2017.

He is committed to the area, and even more so, since meeting his wife Alexia. They have been married for five years and have a four-year-old daughter. What does he think about living in Los Cabos? “It’s absolutely great,” Evans told us, “my wife’s entire family is in Los Cabos. My family visits frequently and we just love our life and love the lifestyle here in the Baja.” As Director of Golf, Evans oversees all the golf operations and works with the staff on delivering a fantastic golf experience to all guests and members on the course. He thinks Cabo del Sol has some of the best golf in the area. Here is how he described it to us at Cabo Dream Homes.
Cabo del Sol’s Ocean and Desert courses were the first two championship golf courses in Los Cabos. Jack Nicklaus designed the Ocean Course, and had the use of the coastline for seven holes on the Sea of Cortez, which is very rare, as usually for a golf course that land would be used for real estate, but we have a great connection with the ocean, arguably more connection than any other golf club in the world. Jack Nicklaus himself,” related Evans, “describes the last three holes as the best three finishing holes along the ocean in the world.”

The Desert Course is the 18-hole Tom Weiskopf, who some say is the master of desert-course designers. As Evans explained,
It complements the Ocean Course well. It starts at the clubhouse and winds through the hillside, on the mountainside of the highway. It really offers supreme vistas of the entire property of Cabo delSol.”
Since Evans has been at Cabo del Sol, a whole new era is opening up in its development. They hired a great addition to their team, Jill McGill, who is an LPGA tour professional, and are offering more opportunities to a diverse group of golfers and guests, including beginners, children, and couples. They also started their first junior program which Evans is planning on expanding in the years to come. In the past year, Cabo del Sol also incorporated GPS in the golf carts.
Thebig news,” announced Evans, “is in the master-planned community, with the addition of two five-star hotels expected. Everyone is looking forward to exciting years down the road.”
